Product information management software · 2026 comparison

Best PIM software for Shopify in 2026: 8 platforms, honestly compared

A furniture brand with 3,000 SKUs, two Shopify stores, and forty dealers does not need the same product information management software as a CPG company publishing to 2,600 retailers. This page compares Apimio, Akeneo, Salsify, Plytix, Sales Layer, Pimcore, Pimberly, and inRiver on the things that decide the outcome for a Shopify merchant: native App Store install, published price, time to live, multi-store sync, a real publish gate, hosted channel feeds, image library, B2B line sheets, API and MCP access, and AI content. Every price was read from the vendor's public pricing page on 2026-08-27. Where a competitor is better, it says so.

Why the wrong PIM hurts more than no PIM

What goes wrong when product information management software doesn't fit Shopify

A PIM that fits Shopify removes work. One that doesn't adds a project, a partner, and a parallel spreadsheet. These are the five failure patterns we see when a Shopify merchant picks a platform built for a different job.

The wrong PIM on Shopify

The PIM built for Shopify

A six-month project for a catalog that changes weekly

Akeneo Enterprise, Salsify, and inRiver implementations run three to six months with an integration partner. A furniture brand that adds a fabric line every quarter is still in data-modeling workshops when the line ships — so the team keeps the spreadsheet running in parallel, and now there are two sources of truth instead of none.

Install from the App Store, catalog syncs the same day

App Store install, the account provisions itself, the catalog syncs, and Store Health scores every listing in the same session. Turbo Import handles 15,000+ products with the first products visible in about five seconds. There is no implementation partner because there is nothing to implement.

Shopify is 'one connector among fifty'

Generic PIMs treat Shopify as one export channel among fifty. Variants above Shopify's 100 default, metafield list types, Markets locales, and Plus Org Admin all need custom mapping — usually billable partner hours. The sofa with fabric × size × leg finish gets flattened or truncated on the way in.

Built on Shopify's data model, not mapped onto it

Catalog Hub reads and writes every metafield type Shopify supports, Variant Manager handles matrices to the 2,048-variant ceiling, translations map to Shopify Markets locales, and Plus Org Admin connects every store in one authorization. See /products/catalog-hub for the data model.

Two stores, one product, duplicate SKUs

Without a per-store override layer on a canonical record, a $1,299 sofa in the US store and a €1,199 sofa in the EU store become two products. Inventory splits, reports disagree, and a bulk price change has to be run twice — and checked twice.

One canonical record, per-store overrides

Store Sync keeps every connected store on one canonical record; you override only price, copy, or visibility per store. Identity matching was verified with a multilingual second store: 19 products in, 19 out, zero duplicates.

A feed app on top of a PIM on top of Shopify

Most PIMs don't host the Google Shopping or Meta feed themselves, so the merchant buys Feedonomics, DataFeedWatch, or Channable on top. That is a second subscription, a second data model, and a second place where a title gets truncated or a GTIN goes missing before Merchant Center disapproves the item.

Fix the data, then feed it — one subscription

Product Feeds generates up to 25 hosted feeds per organization — Google Shopping XML, Meta, Pinterest, TikTok, Bing, plus Amazon and Walmart as TSV files — from the same catalog Quality Guard already scored, with pre-publish diagnostics for the rules that actually cause rejections (Advanced and Enterprise plans). One subscription, not two.

Quote-only pricing hides the year-1 cost

Five of the eight platforms on this page publish no price at all. Implementation, partner hours, onboarding packages, and per-channel add-ons arrive after the demo, which is why so many PIM projects are approved at one number and paid at another.

Published pricing, no implementation fee

Basic PIM $199/mo, Advanced PIM $399/mo, Enterprise PIM from $999/mo, monthly billing, 14-day free trial. The sticker price is the year-1 cost because there is no implementation fee, no partner, and no per-channel add-on.

Year-1 license cost, read from public pricing pages on 2026-08-27

Year-1 cost reality

Only vendors with a published price appear here. Akeneo lists Growth as 'starting at $0 annually' with Advanced and Premium on quote; Salsify, Sales Layer, and inRiver publish no prices at all. Industry-reported Salsify contracts run $50K+ per year as of 2026, but that is not a published figure and is not counted above.

$4,788/yr
Apimio Advanced PIM

Advanced PIM $399/mo × 12. Multi-store sync, Product Feeds, Image Library, Line Sheets, API and MCP included. No implementation fee. Basic PIM is $2,388/yr for a single store.

$5,988/yr
Plytix Pro

Pro $499/mo × 12 for 50,000 SKUs with unlimited seats. Standard is $0/mo for 500 SKUs. Published at plytix.com/pricing.

$9,900/yr
Pimcore Professional

Professional Edition license, billed annually, no product or user limits. Hosting, development, and maintenance are on top. Enterprise Edition is $29,900/yr. Published at pimcore.com/en/pricing.

$36,000/yr
Pimberly Regular

Regular tier for 50,000 SKUs with DAM standard. Pro is $60,000/yr and Corporate $90,000/yr; add-ons run $7,500–$30,000/yr. Published at pimberly.com/pricing.

Shopify-native

Apimio — the PIM built for Shopify

Apimio is the PIM built for Shopify: a self-serve catalog operations platform for merchants who sell complex products across multiple stores. Install from the Shopify App Store, the account provisions itself, the catalog syncs, and Store Health scores every listing in the same session. The six zones — Catalog Hub, Quality Guard, Automation, Supplier Bridge, Trade Portal, and Apimio AI — cover the work a generic PIM leaves to add-ons: Store Sync with per-store overrides, Publish Gate holding incomplete products as drafts, hosted Product Feeds for Google, Meta, Pinterest, TikTok, and Bing, an Image Library for dealers, and a REST API plus an MCP server for AI agents (Advanced and Enterprise plans) — with Line Sheets on every plan. Pricing is published: Basic PIM $199/mo for one store and 10,000 SKUs, Advanced PIM $399/mo for 50,000 SKUs and multi-store, Enterprise PIM from $999/mo. Fit: Shopify and Shopify Plus brands from a few hundred to 50,000 SKUs. Not a fit: brands whose main channels are retailer portals, or teams that need a contractual SLA and a named customer success manager.

What a Shopify PIM does
Enterprise

Akeneo — enterprise PIM with an orphaned free edition

Akeneo is the best-known PIM in the mid-market and enterprise bracket, sold as a SaaS Product Cloud in Growth, Advanced, and Premium packages. Its compare-packages page lists Growth as 'starting at $0 annually' with a free trial, while Advanced and Premium are 'call for a quote' (published pricing as of 2026-08-27). Strengths: a mature attribute and completeness model per channel and locale, Asset Manager, Rules Engine, Shared Catalogs for distributors, a large integrator ecosystem, and an official Akeneo PIM App on the Shopify App Store that imports products, variants, metafields, and media. Shopify is one channel of many, so multi-store setups are modeled as channels and mapped by hand. The free Community Edition has had no new major release since v7.0 in March 2023, and Akeneo's own support page lists September 30, 2026 as the end of support for v7 — see the market-events section below. Fit: brands with 20+ channels, an IT team, and a budget that expects an implementation partner. Not a fit: a Shopify merchant who wants to be live this week.

Enterprise PXM

Salsify — retailer publishing at enterprise scale

Salsify calls itself a Product Experience Management platform rather than a PIM, and the difference is real: its center of gravity is publishing content to retailers and marketplaces — roughly 2,600 commerce destinations and 750 million products, by its own July 2026 numbers. PIM, DAM, syndication, and digital-shelf analytics ship together. There is a Salsify connector on the Shopify App Store, free to install with 'additional charges may apply' and a note to contact Salsify, so the old claim that Salsify has no Shopify app is out of date. The PIM itself is still sold by quote with no public pricing; industry-reported contracts run $50K+ per year as of 2026. On July 22, 2026 Cinven, a private equity firm, agreed to acquire the company; terms were not disclosed. Fit: CPG and consumer brands selling through Walmart, Target, Amazon, and a dozen retailer portals, with a data team to run it. Not a fit: a D2C Shopify brand whose retailer channel is a handful of dealers.

Budget · marketplaces

Plytix — the free-to-start marketplace PIM

Plytix is the SMB PIM with the most transparent pricing in the category: Standard is $0/mo for 500 SKUs, Pro is $499/mo for 50,000 SKUs, Enterprise is custom, and every plan includes unlimited free seats (published pricing as of 2026-08-27). It bundles a DAM, channel feeds, Brand Portals and PDF product sheets, and an AI editor, and its Shopify App Store app — Plytix Multistore AI Bulk Edit — connects several stores and bulk-edits, translates, and syncs content to them. The honest trade-off is depth: Plytix treats Shopify as one of many outputs, so there is no publish gate that holds a product, no per-store override layer on a canonical record, and no feed-rejection pull-back from Merchant Center. Fit: a small team with a few thousand SKUs selling on Amazon, eBay, and Shopify who want one place to write content and a free entry point. Not a fit: a multi-store Shopify Plus operation with complex variant matrices and forty dealers.

Apimio vs Plytix in detail
Mid-market B2B

Sales Layer — B2B PIM with an MCP server

Sales Layer is a Spanish PIM with a strong footprint among European manufacturers and B2B distributors. Its pricing page lists four tiers — Scale (5 users, 10,000 SKUs), Premium (10 users, 50,000 SKUs), Enterprise (35 users, 200,000 SKUs), and Enterprise Plus — all 'get a quote', with a 30-day free trial and the Shopify connector included from Premium up (published pricing as of 2026-08-27). On December 11, 2025 it announced an AI Suite of autonomous agents and an MCP Server, making it one of the first PIMs to expose product data to LLM clients. The Sales Layer PIM Connector on the Shopify App Store supports a multi-store mode, metafields, and multi-language fields. Instant catalogs and product sheets cover the B2B side well. Fit: manufacturers and distributors with a large B2B catalog who also run Shopify. Not a fit: a Shopify-first brand that wants published pricing and feed-rejection diagnostics before it commits.

Open source

Pimcore — open-source PIM for teams with developers

Pimcore is the open-source option: PIM, DAM, MDM, and a CMS in one PHP platform you host yourself or run on Pimcore's PaaS. The Community Edition is free — the pricing page says 'try Pimcore for free and start experimenting, all based on its open core' — while Professional Edition is $9,900/yr and Enterprise Edition $29,900/yr, both billed annually, with PaaS priced on request (published pricing as of 2026-08-27). There are no product, asset, site, or user limits on any edition. The catch is that Pimcore is a development framework as much as a product: you model the data, build the workflows, and maintain the servers, and the Shopify connector is a third-party app from Hamari Agency rather than a Pimcore product. Year-1 cost is dominated by developer time, not license. Fit: a company with an in-house engineering team that wants full ownership of its data model and no per-SKU pricing. Not a fit: a marketing-led Shopify team with no developers on staff.

Enterprise retail

Pimberly — published enterprise pricing, from $36,000/yr

Pimberly is a UK-born enterprise PIM and DAM that publishes its prices, which is rare at this tier: Regular $36,000/yr for 50,000 SKUs, Pro $60,000/yr for 100,000 SKUs, Corporate $90,000/yr for 250,000 SKUs, and Enterprise on request, with optional add-ons from $7,500 to $30,000 a year (published pricing as of 2026-08-27). DAM is standard on every tier and every plan includes unlimited import and export channels. Its Pimberly Enterprise PIM/DAM app on the Shopify App Store is aimed at enterprise customers and repeats the $36,000 starting point. Automation is the pitch: lifecycle workflows, AI-enhanced enrichment for categories, features, descriptions, and tags, and scale into the hundreds of thousands of SKUs. Fit: retailers and distributors with very large catalogs and a procurement process that expects a five-figure annual contract. Not a fit: anyone under about 20,000 SKUs — the price floor makes no sense for a mid-size Shopify brand.

Manufacturers

inRiver — manufacturer PIM with a Shopify app

inRiver is a Swedish PIM built around manufacturers with deep, complex product data — technical specs, compliance documents, sustainability attributes. It publishes four plan names (Foundation, Core, Professional, Enterprise) but no prices; every tier says 'get in touch' (as of 2026-08-27). Its Inriver PIM app is on the Shopify App Store and free to install. Strengths: supplier onboarding, syndication to retailer and distributor channels, digital-shelf analytics through Evaluate, and a generative AI layer called Inspire. Implementations are partner-led and typically take months. inRiver also publishes one of the longest 'PIM for Shopify' guides on the web, which tells you it wants Shopify merchants — but Shopify is still one output channel in an enterprise data model. Fit: a manufacturer selling through distributors and B2B portals with Shopify as a secondary D2C channel. Not a fit: a D2C brand where Shopify is 80% or more of revenue and the team is three people.

Not in the table

Catsy — Shopify-oriented, quote-only

Catsy is a US PIM and DAM that markets itself directly at Shopify merchants and packages its plans by Shopify use case: Essential for a single store, Multi-Store, and Enterprise, all priced on request (as of 2026-08-27), with a free trial on Essential. Its Shopify integration runs over the API from inside Catsy — we could not find a Catsy listing on the Shopify App Store on 2026-08-27, which is why it sits outside the comparison table. Metafields, variants, and media sync, and the DAM is built in. Fit: a small or mid-size Shopify brand that wants a Shopify-oriented PIM and is comfortable getting a quote first.

Not in the table

JasperX (formerly Jasper PIM) — new owner, published pricing

Jasper PIM was acquired by Venzee Technologies in a deal that closed December 31, 2025, and the company renamed itself JasperX Technologies effective February 19, 2026. The product now sells as JasperX PIM with published pricing: Growth $999/mo with 2 sales channels, Professional $1,999/mo with 8 channels, Enterprise custom (as of 2026-08-27). The JasperX PIM Connector on the Shopify App Store supports multiple storefronts from one environment and scheduled pricing and content updates — the closest thing in this group to Apimio's Sale Scheduler. It is left out of the table because the ownership change is recent and the roadmap is still settling. Fit: a multi-store Shopify merchant with a four-figure monthly budget who wants scheduled updates. Not a fit: a small brand — Growth alone is $11,988 a year.

What changed in 2026

Three 2026 PIM market events that change the shortlist

Dated facts, each checked against the vendor's own release or support page on 2026-08-27. They matter because two of them remove options a buyer may have been counting on, and one raises the bar for every PIM on this page.

July 22, 2026

Salsify agreed to be acquired by Cinven

On July 22, 2026 Salsify announced that Cinven, an international private equity firm, had agreed to acquire the company. Financial terms were not disclosed and the deal is subject to regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions. Salsify's own release cites more than 2,000 customers publishing roughly 750 million products across 2,600 commerce destinations for 70,000+ active users. What it means for a buyer: private-equity ownership usually brings pricing discipline and a roadmap concentrated on the largest accounts. If you are a Shopify D2C brand evaluating Salsify, don't expect a move down-market or a self-serve tier.

  • Terms not disclosed; closing subject to regulatory approval
  • 2,000+ customers, ~750M products, ~2,600 destinations, 70,000+ users
  • Expect the roadmap to stay pointed at retailer syndication, not D2C Shopify
Support ends Sept 30, 2026

Akeneo Community Edition: last release 2023, support ending

Akeneo's free Community Edition has not had a new major release since v7.0 shipped on March 8, 2023, and Akeneo's own version-support page lists September 30, 2026 as the end of support for v7 Community Edition. Akeneo's marketing page still calls it a 'forever-free PIM', but development has moved to the paid SaaS editions (Growth, Advanced, Premium) and the cloud 'Serenity' release train. A community-driven fork, LibrePIM, has stepped in with PHP 8.3 and Symfony 6.4 compatibility and security patches. If you run Akeneo CE on Shopify, you have three routes: pay for Growth, self-host LibrePIM and own the maintenance, or move. Apimio's Supplier Bridge imports an Akeneo CSV export with AI column mapping; see /compare/akeneo.

  • Last CE major release: v7.0, March 8, 2023
  • Community fork LibrePIM offers long-term support
  • Options: move to Akeneo Growth, self-support on LibrePIM, or switch
December 11, 2025

Sales Layer launched agentic PIM with an MCP Server

On December 11, 2025 Sales Layer announced an AI Suite of autonomous agents and an MCP Server for what it calls agentic product information management. The agents translate, generate answer-engine-ready descriptions, apply classification codes, validate business rules, and fix images, chaining up to ten actions in one run; the MCP Server connects the catalog to AI clients and automation tools. It matters because it sets the bar: a PIM in 2026 should let an AI agent read and write the catalog, not just a human in a browser. Apimio ships this as the @apimio/mcp package on npm — one npx line connects Claude or any MCP client to a merchant catalog through 47 tools generated from the OpenAPI spec (Advanced and Enterprise plans). Details at /products/developer-portal.

  • Autonomous agents chain up to ten actions in one run
  • MCP Server exposes product data to LLM clients
  • MCP access is becoming table stakes for PIM software in 2026
How to actually choose

Five steps to pick the right PIM for your Shopify operation

An evaluation order that filters out platforms that look great in a demo and break on a real furniture or fashion catalog.

1

Map where revenue actually comes from

If Shopify is 80% or more of revenue, shortlist Shopify-native PIM software first: Apimio, then Plytix or Sales Layer if marketplaces matter more than store depth. If you publish to a dozen retailer portals and Shopify is a side channel, start with Salsify, Akeneo, or inRiver and accept the implementation timeline.

2

Count your real SKU and variant load

Count variants, not just products: a 40-SKU sofa range with fabric × size × leg finish is thousands of variants. Under ~200 SKUs on one store, stay in Shopify admin. Up to 10,000 SKUs on one store, Apimio Basic PIM. 10,000–50,000 SKUs across stores, Apimio Advanced PIM. Past that, Apimio Enterprise PIM or an enterprise platform with a data team behind it.

3

Audit suppliers and dealers

Five suppliers sending five CSV layouts means you need supplier import with saved mappings — Supplier Bridge in Apimio, Akeneo's import profiles, or inRiver's onboarding module. Ten or more dealers who need price lists and images means a B2B portal with line sheets, which rules out platforms where that is a custom build.

4

Price year one, not the license

Add license, implementation partner, onboarding package, per-channel add-ons, hosting if self-hosted, and the feed app you'll still need if the PIM doesn't host feeds. Apimio Advanced PIM is $4,788 for year one with none of those line items; Pimberly Regular is $36,000 before add-ons; quote-only vendors won't give you the number until after the demo.

5

Trial it on your ugliest catalog data

Import your worst product — the 400-variant one with three languages and a supplier spreadsheet behind it — and see what survives. Apimio, Akeneo Growth, Plytix, and Sales Layer offer a trial; Salsify, Pimberly, and inRiver offer a demo. A PIM you can't try on your own catalog is a PIM you're buying on a slide deck.

Selection criteria

How to choose PIM software for Shopify: six criteria

The criteria the comparison table scores, in the order they tend to decide the outcome for a Shopify merchant.

Shopify depth

The single biggest predictor of a good outcome. A PIM built for Shopify understands the platform's data model — variants, metafield list types, Markets, Plus Org Admin — and syncs through webhooks in near real time. A generic PIM treats Shopify as one export among fifty and bills you to map the gaps. Check who publishes the App Store listing: the vendor, or an agency.

  • Official App Store listing, not a partner connector
  • Reads and writes metafields, variants past 100, Markets locales
  • Per-store overrides on one canonical record

Quality enforcement

Every PIM shows a completeness percentage. Very few act on it. The difference between a score and a gate is whether a sofa with no dimensions can go live at midnight before a sale. Ask the vendor to show you a product being held, not a chart of how many are incomplete.

  • Quality score per listing against category rules
  • A gate that holds incomplete products as drafts
  • Fix list you can work through, not a dashboard you glance at

Channel feeds

If you advertise on Google Shopping or Meta, the PIM either generates and hosts the feed or you buy a second tool. Ask whether it maps your categories to Google's product taxonomy, whether it warns about title length, GTIN, image size, and price mismatches before publishing, and whether it shows you the channel's actual rejection afterward.

  • Hosted feed URL the channel polls, refreshed on schedule
  • Pre-publish checks for the rules that cause rejections
  • Real Merchant Center and Meta rejections pulled back onto the product

Supplier and dealer coverage

A furniture brand's catalog has two ends: suppliers sending spreadsheets in and dealers pulling price lists and images out. If the PIM covers only the middle, you'll buy a supplier import tool and a B2B portal separately. Count how many of those ends are standard, add-on, or 'build it yourself'.

  • Supplier CSV import with saved column mappings
  • Branded B2B portal, guest access, line sheets
  • Image library your dealers can pull from

API, MCP, and AI

Two questions for 2026: can a developer script the catalog, and can an AI agent? Look for an OpenAPI spec, signed webhooks, bulk endpoints, and an MCP server. For AI content, prefer opt-in generation you preview over automatic rewrites, and ask how it's metered — per token, per product, or bundled into a tier you don't otherwise need.

  • Documented REST API with bulk endpoints and webhooks
  • MCP server so AI agents can read and write the catalog
  • AI content that previews before it writes, and is metered honestly

Total cost and how you find it out

Three of the eight platforms publish full pricing (Apimio, Plytix, Pimberly), one publishes a floor (Pimcore), and four don't publish at all. Year-1 cost is license plus partner plus onboarding plus add-ons plus the feed app. Insist on the whole number before the second call, and insist on a trial.

  • Published price you can budget against
  • Implementation, onboarding, and add-ons listed up front
  • A trial on your own data, not a demo on theirs
Honest scorecard

Where Apimio wins — and where it doesn't

Four places Apimio beats the other seven for a Shopify merchant, and two where a competitor is the better buy. If either of the last two describes you, follow the recommendation.

Wins: live the same day

App Store install, self-provisioning, catalog sync, and a quality score on every listing in one session. The nearest competitor on speed is Plytix (days to weeks). Akeneo Enterprise, Salsify, inRiver, and Pimcore are measured in months and partner hours.

Wins: a publish gate, not a percentage

Quality Guard scores each product against category rules and Publish Gate holds incomplete products as drafts until they pass. The other seven show a completeness percentage or a readiness report; none of them, as far as their public documentation shows, hold a product back from a Shopify store.

Wins: PIM, feeds, and B2B in one subscription

Catalog Hub, Store Sync, Quality Guard, Product Feeds with rejection pull-back, Image Library, Line Sheets, Supplier Bridge, API and MCP — one subscription at $399/mo on Advanced PIM, with Trade Portal as an add-on. Most competitors need a feed app, a B2B portal, or an agency to cover the same ground.

Wins: the sticker price is the year-1 price

Basic $199, Advanced $399, Enterprise from $999 per month, on the pricing page, with no implementation fee. Only Plytix and Pimberly are as transparent, and Pimberly starts at $36,000 a year.

Doesn't win: enterprise SLA, CSM, and retailer networks

If your procurement team needs a contractual uptime SLA, a named customer success manager, a security questionnaire answered by a dedicated team, and syndication to hundreds of retailer portals, Akeneo Advanced or Premium and Salsify are built for that and Apimio is not. Say so in the RFP and save everyone a cycle.

Doesn't win: live marketplace API sync beyond Shopify

Apimio publishes Amazon and Walmart as importable TSV files and hosts feeds for Google, Meta, Pinterest, TikTok, and Bing — it does not run live API listings on marketplaces. If Amazon, eBay, and Walmart are your main channels and Shopify is secondary, Plytix or Sales Layer will serve you better today.

PIM software FAQ

Best PIM software: frequently asked questions

The questions Shopify merchants type into Google when they compare product information management software.

For a merchant whose revenue is mostly on Shopify, Apimio is the best PIM for Shopify: it is the only platform in this comparison that is Shopify-native end to end — App Store install, one canonical record synced to every store with per-store overrides, a publish gate that holds incomplete listings as drafts, hosted Google and Meta feeds, and published pricing from $199/mo. If you publish to dozens of retailer portals and Shopify is a side channel, Salsify or Akeneo is the better fit; if marketplaces dominate and budget is tight, Plytix. The comparison table above scores all eight on the same 13 criteria.

There is no single best product information management software — the right answer depends on where you sell and who runs it. Akeneo and Salsify lead the enterprise bracket for brands with many channels and an IT team. Pimcore leads open source. Plytix leads the free-to-start SMB segment. Sales Layer and inRiver lead among manufacturers and B2B distributors. For Shopify and Shopify Plus merchants specifically, Apimio is the PIM built for Shopify, with published pricing, same-day setup, and the only publish gate in the group. Pick the segment first, then the platform.

PIM software costs anywhere from $0 to six figures a year. Published prices as of 2026-08-27: Plytix Standard $0/mo for 500 SKUs and Pro $499/mo; Apimio Basic PIM $199/mo, Advanced PIM $399/mo, Enterprise PIM from $999/mo; Pimcore Professional $9,900/yr and Enterprise $29,900/yr for the license alone; Pimberly Regular $36,000/yr, Pro $60,000/yr, Corporate $90,000/yr; JasperX Growth $999/mo. Akeneo lists Growth as 'starting at $0 annually' with Advanced and Premium on quote; Salsify, Sales Layer, and inRiver publish no prices. Add implementation, onboarding, add-ons, and hosting to get the real year-1 number.

Partly. Akeneo Community Edition is free and open source, but it has had no new major release since v7.0 in March 2023 and Akeneo's support page lists September 30, 2026 as the end of support for v7 — after that you rely on the community fork LibrePIM or your own patches. Akeneo's paid SaaS Growth package is listed as 'starting at $0 annually' with a free trial, while Advanced and Premium are quote-only (as of 2026-08-27). If you are on Community Edition and sell on Shopify, budget either for Growth or for a switch; Apimio's Supplier Bridge imports an Akeneo CSV export with AI column mapping in an afternoon.

Weight three things above feature count: a flat published price, self-serve setup with no paid onboarding, and no developer requirement. Plytix is the cheapest entry point — Standard is $0/mo for 500 SKUs — and suits a small team spread across Amazon, eBay, and Shopify. Apimio Basic PIM at $199/mo is the better small-business PIM if Shopify is your main store: it installs from the App Store, handles up to 10,000 SKUs on one store, and includes Quality Guard and AI enrichment. Enterprise platforms like Salsify, Pimberly, and inRiver are priced and paced for companies far larger than a small business.

Not always. One store, under roughly 200 SKUs, no supplier spreadsheets, and no dealers — Shopify admin plus a bulk editor is enough, and a PIM would be overhead. You do need one when any of these show up: a second store or Shopify Market with different prices or languages, variants past Shopify's defaults, suppliers sending CSVs in their own layouts, Google or Meta disapproving products for missing data, or dealers asking for line sheets and images. Apimio is the PIM built for that moment on Shopify; see /shopify-pim for what a Shopify PIM actually does day to day.

An ERP runs the business's transactions — purchasing, inventory quantities, orders, invoicing, accounting. A PIM runs the product's story — attributes, descriptions, images, variants, translations, category data, and the rules for what a complete listing looks like on each channel. The ERP knows you have 42 units of a sofa at $1,299 cost; the PIM knows its dimensions, fabric options, care instructions, and which image goes first on the EU store. They connect: the ERP feeds price and stock, the PIM feeds content. Apimio is a PIM, not an ERP; it reads inventory from Shopify and writes product content back, and exposes both through its API.

No. Shopify is the storefront, checkout, and order system; it stores product data per store but is not a PIM. It has no canonical record shared across stores, no per-store override layer, no quality score or publish gate, no supplier import with saved mappings, and no hosted multi-channel feeds. Shopify Sidekick can draft a description for a single store, which is useful but not product information management. Merchants add a PIM such as Apimio on top of Shopify to hold one record per product and sync clean, complete data to every connected store.

Salsify, Plytix, Sales Layer, Pimberly, and inRiver all export channel feeds; Salsify's whole business is publishing to retailer and marketplace destinations. Akeneo does it through Activation and partner apps, and Pimcore through exports you configure. Apimio's Product Feeds generates up to 25 hosted feeds per organization for Google Shopping, Meta, Pinterest, TikTok, and Bing, plus Amazon and Walmart as TSV files, maps your categories to Google's product taxonomy, runs pre-publish checks for title length, GTIN, image size, and price mismatches, and pulls each item's real Merchant Center or Meta rejection back onto the product (Advanced and Enterprise plans). Details at /products/product-feeds.

Every platform on this page has a REST API. Two ship an MCP server, which is what lets Claude or another AI client read and write the catalog directly: Sales Layer announced its MCP Server on December 11, 2025, and Apimio publishes @apimio/mcp on npm — one npx line connects an MCP client to a merchant catalog through 47 tools generated from the OpenAPI spec, backed by a documented REST API v1 with bulk endpoints, idempotency keys, and HMAC-signed webhooks (Advanced and Enterprise plans). Pimcore adds a GraphQL Data Hub for developers. If AI agents are part of your 2026 plan, put MCP on the checklist.

Yes — in 2026 every platform in this comparison offers some AI content: Akeneo AI, Salsify AI, Plytix's AI editor, Sales Layer's AI Suite agents, Pimcore Copilot, Pimberly's AI enrichment, and inRiver's Inspire. The differences are control and cost. Ask whether generation is opt-in or automatic, whether you preview before it writes, and how it is metered. Apimio AI drafts descriptions, meta titles, SEO titles, alt text, translations, and product-type suggestions from the product's own attributes; every draft is previewed before it saves, and usage is token-metered rather than hidden in a tier price.

Yes. Export your catalog from Akeneo or Salsify as CSV or Excel, and Apimio's Supplier Bridge maps the columns to your attribute schema with AI Column Mapping, saves the mapping, and imports — Turbo Import handles 15,000+ products with the first ones visible in about five seconds. Quality Guard then scores every product so you can see what the old system let through before anything reaches a Shopify store. Most brands complete the move inside a 14-day free trial. If your Akeneo data model is unusually complex, book a 20-minute demo at /demo and bring the export.
