GDSN (Global Data Synchronization Network)
The GS1 network that lets trading partners share standardized, GTIN-keyed product data automatically through certified data pools.
GDSN (Global Data Synchronization Network) is the GS1-governed network that lets trading partners — suppliers, brands, and retailers — automatically exchange standardized product data with each other. Instead of emailing spreadsheets, partners publish and subscribe to product records through certified "data pools," all keyed on the GTIN, so everyone works from the same continuously synchronized data.
How GDSN works
A supplier loads product data into a certified data pool; retailers subscribe to that data; when the supplier updates a record, GDSN propagates the change to every subscribed partner automatically. The GTIN plus the target market and a GLN (Global Location Number) uniquely identify each item in the network.
Who uses GDSN?
GDSN is most common in grocery, healthcare, foodservice, and large retail supply chains where standardized, compliant, always-current product data is mandatory. Smaller ecommerce brands and most Shopify merchants typically do not connect to GDSN directly.
GDSN and your PIM
A PIM is where the product data that feeds (or substitutes for) GDSN lives. Apimio centralizes GTIN-keyed product records, validates them, and syndicates accurate data to your Shopify stores and channels — giving Shopify brands GDSN-style "publish once, sync everywhere" consistency without the enterprise data-pool overhead.
