Product data management software for ecommerce catalogs. Not CAD files.
A furniture retailer with 4,000 SKUs keeps its real catalog in three places: a master spreadsheet nobody fully trusts, the Shopify admin where somebody fixed a title last Tuesday, and eleven supplier workbooks that each name the same field differently. Merchant Center disapproved sixty items overnight for a missing category. That is what product data management software solves for an online store: it holds the merchandising record — titles, attribute sets, variants, images, categories and prices that become a storefront listing and a channel feed — in one place, scores it, and publishes it out. If you came here for CAD vaulting or engineering change orders, the next section points you elsewhere.
Two different things share this name
The phrase covers two kinds of product data management systems that do not overlap. One manages engineering design data; the other manages the merchandising record behind a storefront listing. Both are real, both get called PDM by somebody, and buying the wrong one costs a quarter. If the left column describes your problem, the tools named there are the right place to look and Apimio is not one of them.
Engineering PDM / PLM SolidWorks PDM, Autodesk Vault, PTC Windchill | Apimio Commerce product data What this page is about | |
|---|---|---|
| What it stores | CAD models, assemblies, 2D drawings, simulation results and the documents attached to a part. | Titles, descriptions, attribute sets, variants, images, categories, prices and the channel fields a listing needs. |
| What "a product" means | A part or assembly defined by geometry and an engineering bill of materials. | A sellable item and its variant matrix — size, color, fabric, finish — as a customer chooses it. |
| The core control | Revision control with check-in and check-out, so two engineers cannot overwrite the same model. | A quality score and a publish gate, so an incomplete listing never reaches a storefront or a feed. |
| The core workflow | Engineering change orders and approvals moving a design from draft to released. | Vendor file in, enrich and score, publish out to stores, feeds and wholesale buyers. |
| Who works in it daily | Mechanical and electrical engineers, design managers, manufacturing operations. | Ecommerce managers, merchandisers, catalog teams, performance marketers. |
| What it connects to | CAD applications, ERP, MES and the shop floor. | Shopify, Google Merchant Center, Meta Commerce Manager, Pinterest, TikTok, Bing. |
| Tools people name | SolidWorks PDM, Autodesk Vault, PTC Windchill — established products doing a job Apimio does not do. | Apimio and the wider PIM category, compared at /compare/best-pim-software. |
| Does Apimio do this? | No. No CAD files, no drawing revisions, no engineering change orders. If that is the requirement, stop here. | Yes — this is the entire product. |
Where product data breaks in an online store
None of these are Shopify faults. Shopify admin is a per-store product editor and a good one. Breakage starts when one catalog has to exist in several stores, arrive from several suppliers, and satisfy several channels.
What the catalog looks like before there is a system of record
What one central product record changes
The spreadsheet is the real system of record
4,000 rows, 60 columns, three people editing, and a tab called FINAL_v4_use_this. It is the only place the full attribute set exists, nothing validates it, and every export is wrong within a day.
One record per product, every store a destination
Catalog Hub holds one canonical record with its attributes, variants, media, metafields and locales. Each store becomes a publishing destination with price and visibility overrides, not its own copy of the SKU. See /products/catalog-hub.
Eleven suppliers, eleven column layouts
One vendor sends Width, another W, a third Overall Width (in.). Somebody re-maps by hand every time a price list lands, and if they are away the import does not happen.
Supplier columns mapped once, then re-run unattended
Supplier Bridge uses AI Column Mapping to match a vendor's headers to your attributes and saves the mapping. Scheduled Imports re-runs it from URL, FTP, S3 or Google Sheets on a schedule (Advanced and Enterprise). See /products/supplier-bridge.
The same product drifts across stores and channels
A sectional was copy-pasted from the US store into the Canadian and trade stores, then edited in place. Six weeks on, the descriptions disagree and one store lost eight fabric variants.
A quality score, and a gate before anything goes live
Quality Guard scores each product against 74 rules across four pillars and shows what fixing it is worth for your store. In enforce mode, below-threshold products sync as drafts. See /products/quality-guard.
Incomplete products publish themselves
Shopify will publish a product with no category, no dimensions and one photo. You find out from a Merchant Center disapproval, or from the returns queue when a bed frame does not fit.
Channels fed from data that already passed the bar
Product Feeds generate hosted feed URLs for Google Shopping, Meta, Pinterest, TikTok and Bing that each channel polls on its own schedule, with diagnostics before you publish (Advanced and Enterprise). See /products/product-feeds.
Nobody can reconstruct who changed what
A price is wrong across 400 products after a bulk edit. The import, the intern, or last month's trial app? Without per-attribute history there is no answer, so the team stops.
Every change attributed, per attribute
Each write — manual, import, API or AI — is logged against the attribute it touched, with who, when and the before-and-after value.
From vendor file to live listing: the six jobs
A product data management solution earns its place by owning the whole path: data in, held in one shape, judged good enough, then back out to every place that sells. Here is how ecommerce product data management works in Apimio, and which plan each job needs.
One canonical record
One product held once: 24 attribute types with units, variant matrices up to Shopify's 2,048-variant ceiling, all 250 metafields, images, categories and 30+ locales. Per-store overrides cover the cases where price or visibility genuinely should differ.
- Attribute sets defined once, reused across the catalog
- Bulk Edit changes hundreds of products in one grid, with a preview before saving
Vendor intake that survives holidays
CSV and Excel import with column mapping and formulas is on every plan, Basic included. AI Column Mapping proposes the match between a supplier's headers and your attributes; you confirm it. Saved mappings and unattended Scheduled Imports are Advanced and Enterprise.
- Run history of what ran, what changed and what failed
- Runs pause if a subscription lapses — they never break silently
Scoring before publishing
Store Health gives the catalog a headline score with a Channel-Ready threshold at 80, six problem areas in plain language, and fix cards carrying a projected score gain, effort in hours, and revenue impact computed from your own sales data.
- Publish Gate in off, preview or enforce mode, with per-store overrides
- In enforce, below-threshold products sync as drafts — nothing is blocked or deleted
Two-way sync with Shopify
Shopify is the only channel Apimio syncs with live in both directions, through its GraphQL API and webhooks. Store Sync publishes across 2 to 20+ stores (Advanced and Enterprise), and a new store runs identity matching first, so ambiguous matches go to a review queue.
- Turbo Import via Shopify's Bulk Operations API for 15,000+ product catalogs
- Shopify owns inventory; Apimio owns the catalog record
Publishing out to channels
Hosted feed URLs for Google Shopping XML, Meta, Pinterest, TikTok, Bing and price-comparison formats, refreshed on schedule, up to 25 feeds per organization (Advanced and Enterprise). Amazon and Walmart are importable TSV files — files channels read, not live API connections.
- Your categories map to Google's product taxonomy, so channel validation does not fail on free text
- Wholesale and internal fields are excluded from every feed by design
Programmatic and agent access
A REST API v1 covering products, variants, media, categories, attributes, inventory states, multistore overrides and locales, read and write, with cursor pagination, idempotency keys and bulk endpoints up to 500 products per call. The @apimio/mcp server on npm exposes 47 tools.
- HMAC-SHA256 signed outbound webhooks with retries and a delivery log
- REST only — no GraphQL, no packaged SDKs (Advanced and Enterprise)
How a catalog gets from spreadsheet to scored and published
The real sequence, not a stylized one. Most teams reach step four in their first session; step five is where the second store and the channel feeds arrive.
Connect the store and let the catalog import
Install from the Shopify App Store or sign up on the web and connect with OAuth. Import starts immediately — larger catalogs use Turbo Import, first products visible in about five seconds, variants, metafields, media and Markets data intact.
Read the score before you change anything
Quality Guard scores the catalog on arrival and Store Health lays out six problem areas in plain language. For most teams it is the first honest picture: how many products have no category, one image, or none of the dimensions a furniture buyer needs.
Bring the supplier files in properly
Import one vendor workbook with AI Column Mapping, confirm the match to your attribute set, and save the mapping for that supplier (Advanced and Enterprise). Once per vendor. Formulas handle unit conversions and price rules during the import.
Clear the fix list, then turn the gate on
Work the fix cards with Bulk Edit and AI Enrichment — descriptions, SEO titles, meta descriptions, alt text, translations — each previewed before it saves and metered so you know the cost. Then move Publish Gate from preview to enforce.
Connect store two, then point the channels at a URL
Adding a second Shopify store runs identity matching first, so the same SKU becomes one record rather than a duplicate. Then hand the hosted feed URLs to Merchant Center, Commerce Manager, Pinterest, TikTok or Bing. Wholesale buyers read the same data through /products/trade-portal.
A worked example: a 4,000-SKU furniture retailer
A typical shape for a mid-market furniture business running three Shopify stores. Catalog numbers, not a customer result — the revenue and effort figures come from Store Health on your own sales data, reported as ranges.
A US store, a Canadian store and a trade store. Without a central record, three copies of every SKU.
Mapped once per vendor, saved, then re-run unattended from FTP or a Google Sheet (Advanced and Enterprise).
Fabric by size by leg finish, inside Shopify's 2,048-variant ceiling through Variant Manager.
Scored against 74 rules across four pillars. In enforce mode, anything below sits in Shopify as a draft.
Google Shopping, Meta, Pinterest, TikTok and Bing, each a URL the channel polls on its own schedule.
Fashion, beauty and home decor have the same problem
Furniture is the clearest example because the attributes are physical and a missing one causes a return. The job is identical elsewhere — only the fields that matter change, and with them the rules deciding whether a listing is complete.
Fashion and apparel
One style becomes 60 SKUs across size and color, seasonal drops arrive as a vendor lookbook workbook, and the same garment needs different category values for Google than for a marketplace. Supplier color names — Ecru, Bone, Oatmeal — must resolve to something a shopper can filter on. See /for/fashion-apparel.
- Size and color matrices held as structured variants, not free text
- Seasonal supplier drops imported on a saved mapping
Beauty and wellness
Ingredient lists, volumes, claims and shade families are the attribute set, and also compliance surface. A shade reading differently on two stores is a support problem; an ingredient list truncated on one channel is a bigger one. See /for/beauty-wellness.
- Ingredient and volume fields required by rule, not by memory
- AI copy previewed and logged before it saves
Home decor and multi-store retail
Decor catalogs turn over fast and lean on imagery, so the fields that fail are images and materials rather than copy. Image Guard checks assets against the same bar as the text. Multi-storefront retailers hit drift earliest — see /for/multi-store-shopify and /for/shopify-plus.
- Image checks alongside text rules in the same score
- Identity matching before a second store merges in
What changes once one record owns the catalog
What teams describe after the catalog moves into a single record. No percentages on purpose — the numbers that matter come from Store Health on your own data, as ranges.
One edit, every destination
A corrected dimension, a new fabric variant or a price change is made once and reaches every connected store through Store Sync, and every feed on the next refresh.
Incomplete listings stop escaping
Publish Gate turns a hope into a rule: products under your threshold sit in Shopify as drafts, a queue someone can work rather than listings a channel finds first.
Supplier onboarding becomes a one-time task
Mapping a vendor's columns is work you do once. After that the file arrives and updates the catalog on a schedule (Advanced and Enterprise).
Channel rejections get caught upstream
Because the feed is built from scored data and checked before publishing, Merchant Center stops being where you discover sixty products have no category.
Bulk changes become safe to make again
Per-attribute history, plus roles deciding who can touch price versus copy, lets a team run a 400-product change without gambling.
The data is portable, not captive
CSV export covers seven platform formats and the REST API reads everything the interface can. Shopify stays the record for orders and inventory.
Questions people actually search
Straight answers, including the cases where Apimio is the wrong tool.
In ecommerce, product data management software holds one authoritative record per product — title, description, attribute set, variants, images, categories, price and the channel fields a listing needs — and publishes it to every store and channel. The category is usually sold as PIM. Apimio is the Shopify-native version: two-way Shopify sync, 74 quality rules scored before a listing goes live, and hosted feeds for Google, Meta, Pinterest, TikTok and Bing.
No. SolidWorks PDM, Autodesk Vault and PTC Windchill are engineering systems: they vault CAD models and drawings, enforce revision control and check-in/check-out, and run engineering change orders against a bill of materials. Apimio does none of that and is not an alternative to them — it manages the merchandising record that becomes a storefront listing and a channel feed. For CAD files, drawings or engineering BOMs, those three products are the right place to look.
In ecommerce the two phrases are used interchangeably, and vendors including Apimio sell into the same searches with both. Product information management, or PIM, is the established name for the software category; product data management is the phrase buyers often type, and also the name of the unrelated engineering discipline. For the formal definition, and how it relates to a DAM or an ERP, see /glossary/pim.
A spreadsheet holds up while one person owns the catalog, one store sells it, and nothing external validates it. It stops at the third supplier, the second store, or the first channel that rejects products for a missing field. The test: if you cannot say which copy of a product is authoritative, it has already stopped working. Apimio starts at $199/month on the Basic PIM plan.
Apimio's Basic PIM plan is $199/month for one Shopify store and 10,000 SKUs. Advanced PIM is $399/month for 50,000 SKUs and adds multi-store publishing, hosted channel feeds, scheduled imports, workflows and the API. Enterprise PIM starts at $999/month, configured per contract. Yearly billing is two months free on the self-serve plans, and every plan starts with a 14-day free trial on the Advanced feature set. See /pricing.
Apimio generates hosted, tenant-scoped feed URLs for Google Shopping XML, Meta, Pinterest, TikTok, Bing and price-comparison formats, refreshed on a schedule, on Advanced and Enterprise plans. Each channel polls the URL on its own timetable — these are feed files the channels read, not live API integrations, and the same is true of Amazon and Walmart, supported as importable TSV files. More at /product-feed-management.
No. Shopify remains the storefront, the checkout, and the record for orders and inventory. Apimio sits above it and owns the catalog: the product record, its attributes, variants, media, categories and translations, plus the rules deciding whether a listing is complete. The sync is two-way, so an edit made in Shopify admin flows back. Apimio does not do order management, CRM, POS or theme editing.
Yes, on Advanced and Enterprise plans or by arrangement. Apimio ships a REST API v1 covering products, variants, media, categories, attributes, inventory states, multistore overrides and locales, with cursor pagination, idempotency keys and bulk endpoints up to 500 products per call, plus HMAC-signed webhooks. The @apimio/mcp server on npm exposes 47 tools generated from the OpenAPI spec. REST only — no GraphQL, no packaged SDKs. See /products/developer-portal.
Point it at your real catalog and read the score.
Connect a store, watch the products import, and read Store Health on your own data in the first session — the count of products with no category, no dimensions or one image is usually where the spreadsheet argument ends. The 14-day free trial runs on the Advanced PIM feature set.
