Master Data Management (MDM)

Master Data Management (MDM) is a technology-enabled discipline for creating and maintaining a single, authoritative source of truth for critical business data across an organization.

What is Master Data Management (MDM)?

Master Data Management, or MDM, is the process and technology used to create and maintain a single, consistent, and accurate version of an organization's critical data — often called "master data." This includes data about customers, products, suppliers, locations, and financial accounts.

In manufacturing and retail, product master data is one of the most important domains. An MDM strategy ensures that product information is consistent across all enterprise systems: ERP, PIM, e-commerce, supply chain, and customer service platforms.

Types of Master Data

  • Product master data — specifications, SKUs, descriptions, pricing
  • Customer master data — contact details, purchase history, segments
  • Supplier master data — vendor details, contracts, lead times
  • Location master data — warehouses, stores, geographies
  • Financial master data — chart of accounts, cost centers

MDM vs. PIM

MDM is the broader discipline covering all types of master data across the enterprise. PIM (Product Information Management) is a specialized subset of MDM focused specifically on product data. A PIM system is often the MDM solution for the product domain.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do companies need MDM?

Without MDM, the same product or customer can have conflicting records in different systems, leading to operational errors, poor customer experiences, and inaccurate reporting. MDM eliminates these inconsistencies by establishing a single authoritative record.

What is a golden record in MDM?

A golden record is the single, trusted, complete version of a data entity created by merging and deduplicating records from multiple source systems. It represents the "master" record that all other systems reference.
